Swimming in a Technology Sea

I'm current enjoying the purchase of some new toys, one of which is a new phone, the EVO HTC from Sprint. I must say I'm pretty impressed so far. They have a sweet blog app that I'm trying out to make this post.

And a Scare to Remember

It's truly my favorite time of year. The temperatures are back to reasonable, the leaves are changing and every weekend there is something to do: festivals, corn mazes, and of course Halloween! If you are like me Halloween puts you in the mood for all things creepy so here are a few recommendations for you if you want a good scare.
Raven and I have really been into watching some Ghost Adventures. This has to be the best ghost hunting show out there, the premise is three guys "no big film crews to follow them around" with cameras and some equipment that they apparently have made from various scientist friends. The lead adventurer Zak Bagans who is way more buff than a ghost hunter needs to be, gets responses from the paranormal by taunting the ghosts. "If this is a portal to hell then come on up here and get me" "did you slam that door well slam it again on my head" The thing is that as ridiculous as these guys can get with their ghost taunts; they really do get great responses. They have captured full size apparitions, tons of creepy voices and they have each been possessed at least once. They are currently into the 4th season on The Travel Channel and so far it has been great, one of the best seasons yet. So if you want a good creepy show mixed in with some often unintentional comedy, then check it out.

This is also the time of year that I save up all of my favorite horror movies for little marathons throughout the month. Hear are a few of my new and old favorites:

All around good scares.

Scream: A movie that you thought stared Drew Barrymore until she bought it in the first 10 minutes.

Quote: never, ever, ever under any circumstances say, "I'll be right back." Because you won't be back.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: This still holds up pretty well, some creepy moments, good scares and a hilarious ending to Freddie that always reminds me a little of Home Alone as he bumbles through traps in the real word.

Quote: I probably could have saved her if I'd have moved sooner. But I thought it was just another nightmare, like the one I had the night before. There was... there was this guy; he had knives for fingers.

The Descent: One of those movies where you sort of root for the monster.

Quote: Hey, there's something down here...

Poltergeist: Well this one is just classic, always scary

Quote: It lies to her. It tells her things only a child can understand. It's been using her to restrain the others. To her, it simply is another child. To us, it is The Beast.

Cabin Fever: This movie is just wonderful, directed by Eli Roth it is really more comedy than horror.

Quote: That guy asked for our help. We lit him on fire. You'll understand if I'm not in a particularly social mood.

Pet Cemetery: Not really the best movie ever, but hey I guess that's why I like because it is a good bad movie.

Quote: Sometimes dead is better.

Gothika: It may not be viewed as a classic but I like it. A ghost that scares the hell out of you in an effort to help.

Quote: You are not a Doctor in here. And even if you the tell the truth... no one will listen. You know why? Because you're crazy. And the more you try to prove them wrong, the crazier you'll appear. You are invisible now. Can you feel it?

Halloween: You can try but you can't beat the original, it is still creepy to this day.

Quote: I- I- I watched him for fifteen years, sitting in a room, staring at a wall, not seeing the wall, looking past the wall - looking at this night, inhumanly patient, waiting for some secret, silent alarm to trigger him off. Death has come to your little town, Sheriff. Now you can either ignore it, or you can help me to stop it.

Evil Dead II: A man who knows that if you can't make a good horror movie then just make a ridiculous one.

Qote: Then let's head on down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch.

Paranormal Activity: Well I found this to be extremely creepy.

Quote: You cannot run from this- it will follow you. It may lay dormant for years. Something may trigger it to become more active and it may over time reach out to communicate with you.

Saw: Up until now... I guess saw mostly reminds me of Halloween because every year for the last what 5 or 6 years now one has released in the month of October. Even though I do like all the movies I still really love the original.

Quote: Congratulations. You are still alive. Most people are so ungrateful to be alive. But not you. Not anymore.

The Ring: This is still one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. It doesn't matter how many times I see this one it never gets old and it is always scary.

Quote: I can't imagine being stuck down a well all alone like that. How long could you survive?...Seven days.

If you're in the mood for brains

I'm not a huge fan of zombie movies because well after a while they all start to seem the same but here are a few of my favorites. A classic two that are more the infected humans sort of zombie and three comedies. You can't go wrong with the original Night of the Living Dead. Then 28 Days Later and The Crazies are more zombies caused by viruses that make people zombie like. They feature my least favorite zombie type, the fast zombie.

As for the zombie comedy, everyone knows Shaun of the Dead is great but I also highly recommend Zombieland and Dead Snow. Dead Snow is a delightful Norwegian flim that we found on Netflix instant and absolutely loved.

If the power of Christ compels you...

Some classic movies featuring Satan, the son of Satan or minions of Satan which ever you prefer.
The Omen, The Last Exercism (which I haven't seen but it looks terrifying) The Exercism, The Exercism of Emily Rose, and Rosemary's Baby.

Also for ultimate Halloween enjoyment don't forget to check out your local hauted houses, trails or mazes.

New Photo Project

I have started a photo a day project on my website Stephanieholley.com. Admittedly I have already missed a couple of days and I'm only 10 days in, so we shall see how it goes. I'm doing a color theme for each month. I started with yellow for September and I started about a week or so into September. I chose to do a theme because I think it makes me more likely to take photos of things I wouldn't ordinarily photograph because it fits the color theme. This has also proven to be a bit challenging. It will only get worse as I lose more and more daylight in the evenings after work. Oh well it's just for fun and to give myself a little something creative to do everyday. So Check it out.

Accessorize

I was sick of my jewelry being crammed in the jewelry armoire. My necklaces were always tangled; my earrings always mismatched. It took so long to just get to the stuff I wanted to wear that usually just skipped it all together. So I decided to make myself something to put on the wall to display my jewelry in a way that is more accessible. I got some wood chunks from the craft store, a few strips of that lattice looking stuff and some dinosaurs from walmart. I glued it all together, spray painted it a solid color, and hung it on the wall. I think I'm going to need to make another one, especially if I ever plan on buying more jewelry.

Better Late Than Never

So yesterday Raven got me a copy of Lightroom 3 which I'm pretty stoked about. I'm very excited to play around with it but I don't have any recent photos that need edited. I do however still have a couple of folders left from my summer vacation of 2009 that sadly I have never gotten around to. Mainly because I take an ungodly amount of photos and after a while they all start to look the same. If I see one more foggy photo of the sea I'm going to kill myself. Also one of my folders was almost completely ruined with a dirty filter, possibly the worst I've ever seen. However the new Lightroom has a plug-in that allows you to upload directly to flickr and facebook, so I'm loving it. I guess I just need to take some new photos this weekend.

Vintage Yeah!

OK I may have found my new favorite web site. It is a Japanese site that generates your photos in to antiques with one click. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to photo editing so yeah, this is kinda the best. I haven't check the photo size but I don't think it makes full size images, just web quality but It's still fun. Check it out at Wanokato

Pod People

Something that I have recently learned about myself is that pods greatly appeal to me. First the sleeping pod and now the laptop pod. Come on though, don't these look like an amazing work space? Maybe in a past life I was a Gremlin, I do like to eat after midnight.

Scott Pilgrim review

Last night Raven and I went to see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. My expectations were not extremely high based on what a tough time I've had reading the comic. The problem I had with the comic is that it spends too much time on dialog and flashbacks that seem unnecessary, not to mention boring. My hope for the movie is that much of that would be cut back so it could fit neatly in a two hour time limit. Well the movie was in fact a much abbreviated version of the comic. It spent more time focusing on the overall concept of the story and less time on pointless dialogue. This part was good, but another problem I had with the comic is that comedy in it just wasn't funny enough. I was hoping that the movie would be rewritten to be just a bit more clever, however much of it was taken straight out of the comic. The part of Bryan O'Malley's writing that is most critically acclaimed is the fact that the books are dripping with video game references. Not being an avid gamer I only get the obvious ones so the best part of the comic is completely lost on me. However, I think a great story should transcend it's references and be enjoyable regardless. The references should simply enhance the story, not be it's entire focus.

It is a story with a video game theme, this has been praised for being: "the first of it's kind!" "ground breaking!" Now that may be true, but there have been countless video games that have been turned into live action movies and yeah they pretty much suck. Because video games don't have good stories. If you are going to create a real world movie and ask me to accept all the kookiness like exes with ridiculous powers, people turning into coins when they die, getting a 1up when you defeat an enemy; it either needs to be extremely funny or have an incredible story. Scott Pilgrim has neither. I have only read through 3 of the comics and after the movie I had Raven just tell me how it ended; I've decided not to waste anymore of my time trying to enjoy this story.

After almost 200 views of Etsy the jelly fish shirt finally sold and it went to San Fransico. I wish I could have crunched myself up in the envelope and went with it.

Lost and Found

On a recent walk through the neighborhood, Raven and I came across this discarded rose on the sidewalk, still with the plastic water spike on the end. I wonder what were the circumstances of this ending up beside the road. Was it an angry lover who's heart could not be bought back so easy. Maybe a gift of unrequited love, or it could have just been dropped by accident. Well what ever the case it sure made for a neat picture.

What The?

On a recent trip to Goodwill I came across this odd piece of home decor, which also serves a function as an ash tray. I couldn't help but snap a picture of this because it really just makes zero sense. First off why would you want what looks like a severed foot for an ash receptacle. Second why oh why is the big toe pointed so ridiculously in the air.

Also I noticed that Goodwill is now holding on to the really good donations and putting them in a silent auction. This is good for raising money and all but isn't that part of the fun when shopping second hand, the chance of getting a 10 dollar Prada bag instead of a stained NoBo shirt that probably cost more used than new.

Heros Con

Last weekend Raven and I headed to the big city of Charlotte NC for Heros Con, meeting up with some fellow comic nerds from WV. We didn't get a table for this one because they were a bit pricey. We do pretty OK with button sales at such events, but it would take a butt load of buttons just to break even. So we just went to have fun, mission accomplished. Now it's true that as comics go I'm a bit of a newbie so honestly I'm not too impressed with the "rock stars" of the comic world that might attend such events. Don't get me wrong I love comic movies, I'm just not that interested in main stream comics. I ended up with a couple of comic selections that I loved.
First was a couple of Owly books written by Andy Runton. This series is really intended for children or just anyone that has an affection for all things adorable. Owly is a gentle baby Owl who has trouble flying and making friends because most of the small forest creatures fear him by reputation.

The other comic I purchased was making it's debut at Heroscon. This is a graphic novel called Red Moon by David McAdoo. I was very hesitant to take a chance on this. Like so many others I was traumatized at a young age by Where the Red Fern Grows. From then on I really don't watch or read stories, especially dramatic stories that feature two lovable dogs. For some reason people seem to think the only good dog story is one where the dog dies. Old Yeller, Marly and Me, Turner and Hooch...the list goes on. So I really spent some time thinking about whether or not I wanted to read an apocalyptic tail that evolves around two dogs. But I really loved this story. The art was fantastic; I could definitely see these characters in a movie. I recommend this to anyone who loves animals, and hey who doesn't love animals. Check out their blog

Well I ate to much, I spent too much, I met some great people, got some good pictures, yeah that's my idea of a super weekend.

Idiotarod

Last weekend I was able to attend my first Idiotarod. I had absolutely no idea what this was I only knew shopping carts, funny clothes and racing was involved. This was really all I needed to know. I actually visualized a short race or a short series of races and even imagined people actually in the carts, which I thought a bit dangerous but good for photos. It really wasn't exactly as I imagined but it was close. The race was quite long and included a bit of community service as they had to plant trees, pick up brush and do a little mulching. Me and Julia tried to keep up but we had no water and are both quite out of shape. We did get a lot of really fun pictures from the day despite near dehydration. Next time I will know what to expect and be more prepared.

Fanatacon

Oh no this is the second comic themed post in a row. Well Saturday was Fanatacon, held at the art center of Asheville. This was the first year for it and I would say a huge success. About 3,000 people went through from what I heard. Raven went to promote his comic and I went as mostly table filler. I sold buttons and some of my shirts. It was nice to get a feel for what a real con is like seeing as we have only ever been to the joke of a con that is Tsubasacon in WV. We met some great people during the years we attended, but it is just to small and full of immature petty behavior. Now that I know real cons aren't that way I have new excitement for whole business. I can't wait to plan and attend the next one. We will be at Herocon in Charlotte NC but only as attendees, the tables were all sold out, not to mentions extremely expensive.
